Description

In the late Han dynasty, there was a strategist named Xun Yu — chief advisor to Cao Cao, holder of the title Imperial Secretary, and by all accounts one of the most brilliant minds of the Three Kingdoms era. He was also famously devoted to fragrance. Historical records note that wherever Xun Yu sat, the scent lingered for three full days after he left. The idiom 荀令留香 — "Lord Xun leaves his fragrance" — has been used ever since to describe a person of extraordinary refinement and quiet, unmistakable presence.

This formula is that presence, made wearable. It's the most architecturally expansive blend in the collection — seven ingredients including ambergris, designed not just for internal focus but for the kind of composed authority that fills a room without raising its voice.

The Formula

Seven ingredients in classical hierarchy, balancing depth, projection, and lasting power:

Agarwood & White Sandalwood · The Sovereigns 沉香 · 白檀 The formula's twin pillars. Agarwood brings depth — quiet, penetrating, with a sweetness that unfolds slowly from underneath. White sandalwood brings warmth and radiance — creamy, gently expanding, carrying the fragrance outward. One sinks, one rises. One is shadow, one is light. Together they establish the blend's grand, unhurried, noble tone and create the mental stillness that makes sustained focus possible.

Patchouli & Clove · The Ministers 广藿香 · 丁香 The projection engine. Patchouli's earthy, herbaceous intensity gives the fragrance its remarkable carrying power — this is the ingredient responsible for the "ten miles" in the name. Its persistent, grounding aroma amplifies the formula's reach and staying power far beyond what wood notes alone could achieve. Clove adds a concentrated burst of warm sweetness, lifting the top of the blend and preventing the earthy depth from becoming heavy.

Rose & Sweet Clover (Líng Líng Xiāng) · The Assistants 玫瑰花 · 灵香草 The refinement layer. Rose softens the masculine backbone of agarwood and patchouli, threading a delicate floral sweetness through the blend's power — elegance within strength. Sweet clover, known in classical formulas as 零陵香, adds a clean, grassy lightness with traditional "orifice-opening" properties that keep the fragrance nimble and alive, preventing it from becoming dense or cloying.

Ambergris · The Guide 龙涎香 The invisible luxury. Ambergris is not loud — its own scent is subtle, oceanic, faintly animal. But its role is irreplaceable: it synchronizes the evaporation rates of every other ingredient, binding them into a single, seamless arc of fragrance that unfolds with extraordinary patience. It's the reason this formula doesn't just smell refined — it lasts, and it deepens over time. Ambergris is what transforms a blend from good to unforgettable.

What It's For

This formula works on three levels simultaneously: calming the spirit for clarity, opening the sensory pathways for alertness, and nourishing the kidney-essence that TCM considers the root of memory and intellectual stamina. It doesn't overstimulate — it creates what the source text calls a state of 静而定,定而生慧: "still, then settled; settled, then wisdom arises."

Wear it when you:

→ Need sustained intellectual power — long study sessions, exam preparation, complex research or writing → Want to project composed confidence — before an important meeting, negotiation, presentation, or interview → Are hosting or attending a gathering that calls for cultural presence — tea ceremonies, art viewings, salons → Seek creative inspiration with staying power — the formula's breadth supports both divergent thinking and disciplined execution → Want a fragrance ritual for personal cultivation — meditation, reading, calligraphy, or simply the practice of being still

The Lineage

The cultural origin traces to Xun Yu (荀彧, 163–212 CE), the legendary Han-dynasty counselor whose personal fragrance became a byword for cultivated presence. The formula itself is documented in Xiāng Chéng (《香乘》), Zhou Jiazhou's comprehensive Ming-dynasty encyclopedia of incense, where it appears as a 佩香 — a wearable sachet blend designed to be carried on the person. Our adaptation preserves the classical structure while adding ambergris for modern longevity and depth.

Ten miles of fragrance. Three days of presence. A mind that stays long after the room empties.
